July 2020 - ANTaR, Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation

Throughout this outbreak of Covid-19 it has once again been shown that it's the vulnerable that are always worst hit. People with compromised health, people without good access to healthy food, people running independent local businesses, the marginalized and the developing world. It is clear that the way we have been living as a species has not supported these people or ourselves and has driven us all into this current crisis.

Perhaps this pandemic is a sign for us all to step up to a higher level of responsibility as individuals and as a collective. To start reflecting on the impact of the things we do, the things we don't and to start addressing the injustices of the present and the past. Without doing this how can we move forward and build a strong, ethical & healthy foundation for the future?

This season Wobbly Spoon is donating $333 to ANTaR who do amazing work on many levels within the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander community. We highly encourage you all to take a look at their website, the work they're doing and to add your voices to the pledges.

April 2020 – Amnesty International.

During the Covid-19 virus outbreak we found ourselves detained in Bangkok airport. Due to a flight delay, complications in Malaysia’s transit rules and our exit having already been processed by Thai Immigration we were stuck. No shower, no bed, only expensive unhealthy airport food available to us and no guarantee of when we would be able to leave. Thankfully the Australian Embassy was able to help negotiate our release with the Thai Immigration Police after four days. There were people from other countries including Vietnam and Kenya who were in the same situation as us for over three weeks and with no clear signs of an end.

During this time we felt so incredibly grateful to have the Australian Embassy there to speak on our behalf and help find a solution. At the same time it was very obvious that this was largely because of our nationality. Although our situation was mild we couldn’t help but think of all those who have been dis-empowered and in far worse situations: those trapped in asylum, victims of political prejudice, victims of war, victims of discrimination.

This, and the tremendous love and support from family and friends during this time, inspired us to give this seasons Wobbly Spoon donation of $222 to Amnesty International. They tirelessly defend and campaign for human rights, looking after those who are being denied their voice.
